Roman Republic

The Roman Republic was an ancient civilization that preceded the Roman Empire. They fought with the Punics (Carthaginians) and nearly got conquered but the military genius Hannibal who sucked at diplomacy was clueless what to do after decimating the Roman armies and defences and hadn't seized Rome even though he perhaps could have. When the Federated Commonwealths of America declared independence from England in 1738, they used the Roman Republic as a template for the new nation, in its style of government with a two-headed executive branch, Latin slogans on important monuments and offices, the naming of currency units, and, less admirably but luckily only for less than a century, the institution of slavery. Rome had a Republican form of government between its eras of monarchy and Empire. Ostensibly, Rome remained a Republic even during the times of the Empire, as the Senate still congregated and approved the new emperor. The Roman Republic or The Senate and People of Rome (SPQR), centralized in Italy is a Republic formed from that of the grace of a military general, Cornelius Alexundrus. A complex constitution gradually developed, centered on the principles of a separation of powers and checks and balances. Except in times of dire national emergency, public offices were limited to one year, so in theory at least, no single individual could dominate his fellow-citizens. developed a strong tradition and morality requiring public service and patronage in peace and war, so military and political success were inextricably linked.
