Nouvelle France (Chaos)
rdfs:comment
In 1514, France sent an expedition to the Caribbean, claimed OTL Hispaniola for themselves, which they called Nouvelle France. In the Peace of Amsterdam 1694, eastern Nouvelle France went to Spain. 1765, the governors of Nouvelle France, Algeria, Caroline and Louisiane declared independence - until France had a king again. Lacking a navy (because the mostly noble captains didn't want to fight for a republic and thus deserted), France couldn't take them back.

Instead, in 1769 king Francesco III occupied the valuable Caribbean colony for Italy. The other powers protested, since they couldn't interfere. There were rumors that he was killed for taking it.
