Born on Darada, 4 ABY, the middle child of Jerrik and Marri Kalu, florists. He has always wanted to travel to other planets and interact with other species. His parents were rather restrictive and had of limited means; Devram rarely left the city of his birth, and only once left his home planet. He excelled in athletics, but academic underachievement was his means of rebellion against his overbearing father. Coupled with the academic success of his sister (a lawyer), and the artistic talent of his younger brother, Devram was the default choice to inherit the family business. Devram was less than pleased, but felt he had few options. However, a late night advertisement for the New Republic Army on the Holonet, which promised visits to "many exotic places such as Hoth, Tatooine, Kashyyyk, Telos, and many many more" and the ability to "build for yourself and amongst others a respect that can't be obtained anywhere else"[1] prompted him to leave Darada and enlist the next day, and leave his old, unfulfilling life behind him.Family Devram is closest to his brother, Anders, who is only a year younger. He is proud of is older sister Jerra's achievements, and fond of her, but the age difference (seven years) has prevented a close bond up to this point. He feels ambivalent towards his father; Devram respects his father's hard work in maintaining his small business, but, like many teenagers, resents the amount of control his father exerts over his life. He loves his mother, but is angry at her for not being the mitigating influence as regards his father that she was for Jerra.
