He was taken to the home of German immigrants that lived across the street of the theater. The Peterson house is where Lincoln died the next morning. If you go and visit the Peterson house, blood is still stained on the pillow that cushioned the dying president's head. Lincoln's eldest son Robert had been present at this shooting as well as the shootings of Garfield and Mckinley. After John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln, he jumped down onto the stage and broke his leg. Dr. Samuel Mudd bound Booth's leg so he could continue to escape. Dr. Mudd was later pardoned. Booth escaped into Virginia and was found in a barn. Booth was shot and killed before a trail could be held. There have been many conspiracy theories about the people that helped Booth murder Lincoln. A fellow actor had tried to kill Secretary Seward by stabbing, but Seward survived. Another friend of Booth's was set to kill Vice President Johnson, but failed because Johnson didn't show up. assassination of Abraham Lincoln, one of the last major events in the American Civil War, took place on Good Friday, April 14, 1865, when President Abraham Lincoln was shot while attending a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre with his wife and two guests. Lincoln's assassin, actor and Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth, had also plotted with fellow conspirators, Lewis Powell, to kill William H. Seward (then Secretary of State) and George Atzerodt to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson. Booth hoped to create chaos and overthrow the Federal government by assassinating Lincoln, Seward, and Johnson. Although Booth succeeded in killing Lincoln, the larger plot failed. Seward was attacked, but recovered from his wounds, and Johnson's would-be assassin fled Washington, D.C. upon losing his nerve. He was assassinated on April 15, 1865 by John Wilkes Booth
