Arion (Ancient Greek: Ἀρίων, gen.: Ἀρίωνος) was a kitharode in ancient Greece, a Dionysiac poet credited with inventing the dithyramb: "As a literary composition for chorus dithyramb was the creation of Arion of Corinth," The islanders of Lesbos claimed him as their native son, but Arion found a patron in Periander, tyrant of Corinth. Although notable for his musical inventions, Arion is chiefly remembered for the fantastic myth of his kidnapping by pirates and miraculous rescue by dolphins, a folktale motif. Herodotus (1,23) says "Arion was second to none of the lyre-players in his time and was also the first man we know of to compose and name the dithyramb and teach it in Corinth". However J.H. Sleeman observes of the dithyramb, or circular chorus, "It is first mentioned by Archilochus (c 665 BC)… Arion flourished at least 50 years later… probably gave it a more artistic form, adding a chorus of 50 people, personating satyrs… who danced around an altar of Dionysus. He was doubtless the first to introduce the dithyramb into Corinth". Arion is also associated with the origins of tragedy: of Solon John the Deacon reports: “Arion of Methymna first introduced the drama [i.e. action] of tragedy, as Solon indicated in his poem entitled Elegies". Arion first came to be as a MUD in 2003 known as The Lost Lands of Arion based on traditional ROM codebase. The only creator then was Rainer Roomet aka Ranka. In 2004/2005 Erich Erstu aka Hyena joined his team and they worked together for some time but very soon Ranka had to go to the army and things were halted. When Ranka returned they started to develop again but not for long. In the end of 2006 Hyena started to create the whole new map for Arion as the old one consisted mainly stock areas. When Hyena was about to finish, things started to fade away. Ranka seemed to be uninterested. However, to test the new world, Hyena had to use another server for testing and after eight months of silence Hyena put his version of Arion up again (encouraged by an old Arion player). As the old Arion's server was down and Ranka had completely lost his interest, Hyena started developing on his own. Thus, the new Arion first appeared in August 2007 and is known as Arion: the Nightmare. Arion: the Nightmare can be played on carlnet.ee 4000 In the summer of 2006 Hyena created a logstation primary for Arion. However, that logstation also supports uploading logs for another Estonian MUD Stonia ( telnet: stonia.ttu.ee 4000 ). After a conversation with Arion, the player can choose to kill him for 10 gold that he drops in the Registered Version. Spoilers end here. The son of two Atlantean Gods, Arion is a powerful sorcerer and the first Lord of Atlantis. Arion is a boss in Bomberman (TG-16). He appears 1-8 and 3-8. He looks a snake/dragon monster. Arion has some advice to offer for the Gyala Hatchery mission. The arions or marsh faries as the Lily People call them are a diminutive race of humanoids from Marcus Malone's Firefall. In addition, on the first day of each month, an Arion horse is given to the player who has won the highest number of rosettes during the previous month, unless this player has already bred this horse in the past. Arion is an immortal horse in Greek mythology. Arion's parents were Demeter and Poseidon. Demeter had taken the form of a mare in order to escape Poseidon, by hiding among a pack of other horses. However, he saw through her guise and turned himself into a stallion, mating with her. Arion and his sister Despoina were born from their union. Arion was extremely swift and endowed with speech.
