Asclepius
rdfs:comment
Asclepius is a medi-bot created in the late 23rd century programmed to perform all procedures, both physical and mental, on all living organisms. The crew encounter him after boarding a space station in search of new technology, only to discover that he has become mad over the years, although he himself denies it, having already given himself the all clear. He sedates Lister and the Cat with tranquilizer darts, thinking them to be two of his old patients, and begins an operation. Asclepius is a Guardian Centurion dispatched to the Mystic Spring of Agairon in Eltnen. He is fatigued from overwork. The etymology of the name is unknown. (cf. Leucippe) In his revised version of Hjalmar Frisk's Griechisches etymologisches Wörterbuch (Greek etymological dictionary), Robert S. P. Beekes gives this summary of the different attempts: One might add that even though Szemerényi's etymology (Hitt. asula- + piya-) does not account for the velar, it is perhaps inserted spontaneously in Greek due to the fact that the cluster -sl- was uncommon in Greek: So, *Aslāpios would become Asklāpios automatically. Nurse Asclepius was the presumed Greek God of Medicine and Healing mentioned in the story "A Special Creature: The Pink Merdog," set in the Trauma Center continuum, which was dealt with as a mission by Agents July Flame and Library. Because Asclepius was found within a dream of the Mary Sue creature, he was recruited due to his preference to remain unharmed and not be stuck there. Once at HQ, he joined Medical, which has made him happier than he'd ever been before. He remains grateful to July and Library. Asclepius was the Olympian god of medicine and healing. Son of Apollo in mythology and brother of Orpheus Hercules told Elora that his cousin, Asclepius, taught him how to make medicines from herbs and roots (HTLJ "Siege at Naxos"). Hercules told Iolaus that Asclepius often said "An apple a day keeps Asclepius away" and that he never quite knew what was meant by that (HTLJ "The Apple"). Asclepius was one of the students mentored by Ceridian. When Ceridian was dying, Hercules suggested that Asclepius might be able to help but Ceridian knew better (HTLJ "Centaur Mentor Journey"). It is named after the symbol of the Greek demigod of medicine, see Rod of Asclepius. Asclepius is a Greek god who was the god of medicine, believed to have originated the Healing touch. He may be the ancestor of the surgeons who can use it. A variation on his symbol was present on Aquan objects on Argo. (TAS: "The Ambergris Element") His name was used in a version of the Hippocratic Oath spoken by The Doctor in 2373. (VOY: "Darkling") The quote from the USS Pasteur's dedication plaque used an alternate "Aesculapius" spelling of his name in the first part of the Hippocratic Oath. (TNG: "All Good Things..." ) Asclepius (or Asklêpios) (Greek: Ασκληπιος) was the god of medicine and doctors. He was the son of Apollo, the god of healing and plague. Asclepius (also known as Asklepios) is the Greek god of healing and medicine. His Roman counterpart is Aesculapius. Asclepius is the Greek god of healing and medicine and a son of Apollo. Asclepius was a demigod, the son of Apollo and Coronis (herself a grandaughter of Ares) of the Lapiths. During her pregnancy, Apollo discovered she was having an affair with Ischys. His sister Artemis, shot her on behalf of her brother. However, Apollo, distraught at the sight of her death, saved his son and gave him to Chiron the centaur to raise. === He was the husband of Epione and father of Hygeia, Iaso, Panaceia, Aegle and Aceso, all deities involved with aspects of healing.

n6:abstract
The etymology of the name is unknown. (cf. Leucippe) In his revised version of Hjalmar Frisk's Griechisches etymologisches Wörterbuch (Greek etymological dictionary), Robert S. P. Beekes gives this summary of the different attempts: "H. Grégoire (with R. Goossens and M. Mathieu) in Asklépios, Apollon Smintheus et Rudra 1949 (Mém. Acad. Roy. de Belgique. Cl. d. lettres. 2. sér. 45), explains the name as 'the mole-hero', connecting σκάλοψ, ἀσπάλαξ 'mole' and refers to the resemblance of the Tholos in Epidauros and the building of a mole. (Thus Jaan Puhvel, Comp. Mythol. 1987, 135.) But the variants of Asklepios and those of the word for 'mole' do not agree. The name is typical for Pre-Greek words; apart from minor variations β for π, αλ(α) for λα) we find α/αι (a well known variation; Edzard Johan Furnée 335 - 339) followed by -γλαπ- or -σκλαπ-/-σχλαπ/β-, i.e. a voiced velar (without -σ-) or a voiceless velar (or an aspirated one: we know that there was no distinction between the three in the substr. language) with a -σ-. I think that the -σ- renders an original affricate, which (prob. as δ) was lost before the -γ- (in Greek the group -σγ- is rare, and certainly before another consonant); Oswald Szemerényi's etymology (Journal of Hellenic Studies 94, 1974, 155) from Hitt. assula(a)- 'well-being' and piya- 'give' cannot be correct, as it does not explain the velar." One might add that even though Szemerényi's etymology (Hitt. asula- + piya-) does not account for the velar, it is perhaps inserted spontaneously in Greek due to the fact that the cluster -sl- was uncommon in Greek: So, *Aslāpios would become Asklāpios automatically. Asclepius was a demigod, the son of Apollo and Coronis (herself a grandaughter of Ares) of the Lapiths. During her pregnancy, Apollo discovered she was having an affair with Ischys. Once at HQ, he joined Medical, which has made him happier than he'd ever been before. He remains grateful to July and Library. Asclepius is blond and may have some powers due to being a godlike entity: he was able to repair JF's concussion while she was on fire after July tried to kill her. Asclepius (also known as Asklepios) is the Greek god of healing and medicine. His Roman counterpart is Aesculapius. Asclepius taught Kamaros about the effects of Lotus Leaf. He also told Hercules and Iolaus about it (HTLJ "The Lost City" This article is a stub, or very short article, that is most likely incomplete and needs expansion. Asclepius is a Guardian Centurion dispatched to the Mystic Spring of Agairon in Eltnen. He is fatigued from overwork. A variation on his symbol was present on Aquan objects on Argo. He sedates Lister and the Cat with tranquilizer darts, thinking them to be two of his old patients, and begins an operation. Rimmer and Kryten meanwhile encounter another robot on board, Snacky, and confuse him for Asclepius. They eventually find and save Lister and the Cat, rushing both them and Snacky safely on board Starbug. Asclepius, who was subdued by bazookoid fire, gets up and starts to chase them, but is unable to catch up before the station is destroyed by a meteor storm. The crew continue to assume that Asclepius was in fact Snacky, with Rimmer even attempting to use his psychiatric skills, before discovering the truth.
