The canton portion of the flag featuring a blue rectangle with five pointed stars for each of the states that made up the United States. (TNG episode: "The Royale") In addition to be woven into cloth, as was traditional, the flag was also painted on to the sides of American aircraft, naval vessels, and space vessels. The flag was also part of the uniforms for military and police forces. The TOS novel: A Flag Full of Stars tells us that the USA would have 56 states (and presumably 56 stars on the flag) by the year 2271. The Star Trek Encyclopedia version shows a standardized arrangement with the blue canton field resting on a white stripe, while the two depictions of this flag in the episode "The Royale" show an alternate arrangement with the blue canton field resting on a red stripe.
