Curiously, members of this species have been observed in the Deep Space 9 station at the other side of the galaxy. It is hence possible that the Caatati civilization extends or has previously extended into the Gamma Quadrant and has access to the wormhole leading to the station. Another possibility is that these represent outcasts who have explored the galaxy on their own. In any case, save for the possibility of these beings belonging to a different species which happens to look identical to the Caatati (the same way that many unrelated Star Trek species look externally identical to Humans) it is likely that the 27 nomad ships encountered by Voyager are not really the last ones of the species, even if they may believe themselves to be. thumb|Lumas, ein männlicher Caatati Die Caatati sind ein Volk aus dem Delta-Quadranten. n17:abstract
The Caatati were a warp-capable Delta Quadrant species. Until the mid-24th century, the Caatati considered themselves to be a proud and accomplished people, native to a planet of millions. In the early 2370s, they lost everything when their world was assimilated by the Borg, except for 27 ships. These escaped carrying a small number of survivors but were forced to wander throughout space, begging where they could, but more often than not being driven off. Their technology relied heavily on thorium isotopes, but they had lost the ability to replicate the element and so they gradually were running out of power and time. By early 2374, the situation of the survivors was desperate. Malnutrition was common, which took an especially hard toll on the children. Attempts to settle on a planet, where they could grow their own food, failed as they were seen as vagrants, even criminals, and unwelcome. That year, a group of three Caatati ship encountered the USS Voyager and were given stocks of food. A little later, they found Voyager's warp core after it had been dumped and claimed it. They then tried to use it as a bargaining chip for more supplies. Instead, Seven of Nine offered them the lost thorium replication technology, which she recalled from her time with the Borg. The Caatati gladly agreed. Caatati religious belief was polytheistic. Upon Janeway's offer of food and medical supplies, Rahmin blessed them by saying, "May the gods smile on you and your crew." (VOY: "Day of Honor") A female Caatati was seen standing at a dabo table in Quark's in 2374. (DS9: ) Curiously, members of this species have been observed in the Deep Space 9 station at the other side of the galaxy. It is hence possible that the Caatati civilization extends or has previously extended into the Gamma Quadrant and has access to the wormhole leading to the station.
