__NOEDITSECTION__ A mass driver or electromagnetic catapult is a proposed method of non-rocket spacelaunch which would use a linear motor to accelerate and catapult payloads up to high speeds. All existing and contemplated mass drivers use coils of wire energized by electricity to make electromagnets. Sequential firing of a row of electromagnets accelerates the payload along a path. After leaving the path, the payload continues to move due to momentum.

We have continued to refine our railgun technology. The new mass driver technology has allowed us to develop a new type of slug that has less resistance than the previous alumnium-based technology. This has allowed us to increase the rate of fire substantially which allows them to do more damage. However, this has been mostly offset by the fact that more rounds have to be stored on ships. The net impact is that the new railgun uses a bit less space to achieve the same level of damage. Ships that do not have armor will find that railguns are a powerful weapon.
