Night is when the crazues cine out, as any cop, cabby or paramedic can tell you. Maxine Webber had more or less come to terms with the nightly routine of knife and gunshot wounds from robberies, gang fights and drive-by shootings, but everyone in the night knows that there are far worse things festering in the shadows. She had always expected that on day she'd have to deal with the work of a serial killer, but that did nothing to lessen the shock. The victim had a piece of wood the size of a baseball bat sticking right through her torso. There was no pulse, and it looked like rigor mortis had already set in - but something made Maxine try anyhow. Perhaps it was the victim's eyes, which seemed to be staring right at her in silent appeal. Maxine is not sure exactly what happened after she removed the wood. On arrival they found her unconscious and the back of the ambulance open. No one reported finding a body on the street, so the incident has been quietly forgotten. Strange things happen at night.
