Summer Day – the Hyena, is falling from the top of the World Trade Center. Firestorm flies downward past her, and transforms the city street below into a river of water allowing the Hyena to land safely. Stein criticizes Ronnie for his poor judgment and the two split into their respective separate entities. Hyena, meanwhile escapes. Later, Ronnie goes down to Eastside Hospital where he meets chief resident, Dr. Barry Gleason. He speaks with Gleason only briefly, but soon decides that the man is a complete jerk. At Concordance Research, Martin Stein finds a termination notice stapled to the door of his laboratory. Harry Carew invites Stein over to his apartment in the hopes of cheering him up. During the conversation, Harry confesses to prying into Stein's life by attempting to reconstruct a personal recording he had made. He apologizes to Martin and explains that he once felt that Stein was a threat to his position. Outside, Clarissa Clemens monitors Stein's downfall. She reports to a mysterious stranger who refers to her as Operative Nine. The second Hyena, , attacks Dr. Gleason at Eastside Hospital. He wants revenge on Gleason for always treating him as a second-class-citizen. Ronnie and Martin turn into Firestorm and fly to the medical center to help. Firestorm is still a partial were-hyena and finds himself succumbing to raw emotion. He dives into Hyena and the two engage in a brutal physical battle. Despite Firestorm's enhanced prowess, he is no match for the stronger were-creature. Jivan begins tearing into him, scratching and biting into Firestorm's back. Summer Day, the original Hyena shows up and tries to stop Dr. Jivan. Jivan reverts into a completely animalistic state and turns on Summer. The two Hyenas begin fighting one another on the streets of New York. Firestorm limps away to nurse his wounds. He attempts to separate into Ronnie Raymond and Martin Stein but is startled to discover the he cannot.
