Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by nine members who are known as The Original Group of 1908. Later, seven other sophomores expressed interest in the sorority, and were accepted without being initiated and are known as The Sophomores of 1910. In 1913, a dichotomy existed within the sorority, and seven members wanted to re-organize Alpha Kappa Alpha. The seven wanted to "establish a national organization, enlarge the scope of activities of the sorority, change its name and symbols, and be more politically oriented." However, graduate Nellie Quander was dismayed at the plans and organized The Incorporators of 1913, who incorporated the organization as a perpetual body on January 29, 1913. A day later, on January 30, 1913, the organization was nationally incorporated as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. The seven dissenters along with fifteen other women organized Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on January 13, 1913. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will celebrate centennially on January 15, 2008. Membership is extended to female college undergraduate and graduate students. The sorority also bestows honorary membership as the highest honor. Listed below are the founders and international presidents of Alpha Kappa Alpha, as well as notable Alpha Kappa Alpha members (both initiated and honorary) involved in the fields of arts and entertainment, business, civil rights, education, health, law, politics, science, and sports.
