As of 2005, the city has an estimated population of 38,899 and a population density of 87.31 persons per square kilometer. The total area is 445.52 km². Myoko City is a merger of three entities - the major one being the city of Arai (新井市; -shi). Arai merged with the town of Myokokogen and the village of Myoko, and changed the name to Myōkō on April 1, 2005. Its name comes from the mountain which dominates the area The former city of Arai was founded on November 1, 1954.
