Pritweşjow was a minor (and very young) member of the Communist Party of Galzbiristan in the late Stanan era, beginning his political career at the age of 33 in 1986, the same year that Guqlanlalbeý Itmańbĕbýew was picked as successor to the ailing Stanan. As such a young member he was able to sidestep much of the infighting that tore at the fabric of the Party surrounding the succession of Itmańbĕbýew and come out both physically and politically unscathed by the upheaval.

Pritweşjow was a minor (and very young) member of the Communist Party of Galzbiristan in the late Stanan era, beginning his political career at the age of 33 in 1986, the same year that Guqlanlalbeý Itmańbĕbýew was picked as successor to the ailing Stanan. As such a young member he was able to sidestep much of the infighting that tore at the fabric of the Party surrounding the succession of Itmańbĕbýew and come out both physically and politically unscathed by the upheaval. A highly charismatic figure, Pritweşjow saw his opportunity late in 1992 after a Party-backed coup overthrew Itmańbĕbýew, but began to fight viciously among each other for power in his stead. On May 3, 1993, Pritweşjow, with overwhelming military support, stormed the Soviet and installed himself as leader of the country. He dissolved the Soviet and the Communist Party and declared the new Republic of Galzbiristan to be a multiparty democracy.
