[view] • RubyDung was a prototype of Minecraft, created by Notch. It was one of the earliest stages of Minecraft development. Cave Game succeeded the prototype, later evolving into the final Minecraft game. Not much known is about the "RubyDung" game, because of how long ago it was made. A total of just five screenshots were released by Notch depicting this development phase. RubyDung was originally intended as a "base-building game", inspired by Dwarf Fortress. Notch also took inspiration from zombie games of the time, leading him to incorporate Zombies into RubyDung. Notch has mentioned that for a time, he was interested in having some gameplay aspects that would parallel Dungeon Keeper, but after playing Infiniminer, he decided this was the direction he wanted to take in developing the game.
