Michael Richard Pence (June 7, 1959 – October 14, 2050) was an American politician who served as the 46th President of the United States from 2019 until 2021, making his administration the fourth shortest in American history, and the shortest of those presidents who did not die in office (709 days). He had previously served as the 48th Vice President of the United States from 2017 to 2019 under the presidency of Donald J. Trump, assuming the presidency upon his resignation on February 11, 2019. Born and raised in Columbus, Indiana, Pence graduated from Hanover College and earned a law degree from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law before entering private practice. After losing two bids for a U.S. congressional seat in 1988 and 1990, he became a conservative radio and television talk show host from 1994 to 1999. Pence was elected to the United States Congress in 2000 and represented Indiana's 2nd congressional district and Indiana's 6th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 2001 to 2013. He served as the chairman of the House Republican Conference from 2009 to 2011. On November 8, 2016, Pence was elected as Vice President, after he dropped out of his gubernatorial re-election campaign in July to become the vice presidential running mate for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who went on to win the presidential election. Many have considered Pence to be the most powerful Vice President in United States history, taking on many of the duties of the presidency from Donald Trump due to his inexperience as a politician and his extended stays away from the White House. Pence would serve as Vice President from his inauguration on January 20, 2017, to Donald Trump's resignation on February 11, 2019, in light of the release of the Russia Tapes. After assuming the presidency and pardoning President Trump, much of Pence's administration was defined by the attempt to heal the wounds made by the Trump administration, as well as run his election campaign for 2020. Pence would go on to lose the 2020 election handily to Elizabeth Ann Warren on November 3, 2020.
