The Battle of Sector 001 was a conflict fought in 2373 between the Federation and the Borg, with the Federation emerging as victors. The fleet was banded together by Admiral Hayes in the Typhon sector, where they were to intercept the Borg ship. The first attack failed, and the Borg cube made it as far as Earth. During this part of the conflict, the ship with Admiral Hayes on was destroyed. The USS Enterprise-E arrived on the scene, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard took command of the fleet. With his tactical knowledge of the Borg, gained from his assimilation six years previously, Picard gave the fleet a set of co-ordinates on which the Federation forces should fire. Whilst they didn't seem to be part of any major systems, the Borg vessel was destroyed after several volleys. Before its explosion, a Borg sphere was launched from the larger ship. The sphere created a temporal vortex, which the Enterprise entered, finding themselves and the sphere in 2063. When the sphere was destroyed, several Borg, including their "leader", the Borg Queen, beamed onto the Enterprise secretly in an attempt to finish their mission. Their plan ultimately failed however, and they were all killed by plasma coolant. (Star Trek: First Contact). The Battle of Sector 001 is a term often applied to the Borg incursion of 2373, in which a single Borg cube penetrated Federation space from the coreward Typhon Sector and fought a running battle to Earth in an attempt to assimilate the Federation capital. The cube was eventually destroyed in orbit of Earth thanks to the intervention of Federation Starfleet Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-E; surprisingly, the cube launched a Borg sphere that then attempted to alter history by preventing first contact between Humans and Vulcans in 2063, but this too was thwarted by Picard and his crew. (TNG movie: Star Trek: First Contact) During the Battle of Sector 001, several ships were targeted for assimilation by the cube. At least one of them was the USS Budapest, whose captain and several of whose bridge crew members were assimilated. Lt. Samuel Bowers was amongst the security forces called upon to fight the invading Borg drones through the use of the TR-116. (DS9 novel: Lesser Evil) The Battle of Sector 001 was a confrontation between the United Federation of Planets and the Borg Collective in 2373, when a Borg cube attempted to assimilate Earth. This incursion of Federation space by the Borg started with the attack on the Federation colony of Ivor Prime. The attack was detected by Deep Space 5, which immediately warned Starfleet Command. Starfleet dispatched a fleet under the command of Vice Admiral Hayes to the Typhon sector to engage the cube. The fleet was unable to stop the cube and a running battle was fought all the way to the Sol system. As the cube neared Earth the fleet suffered a setback with Hayes' flagship destroyed. Only the timely arrival of the USS Enterprise-E saved the situation. Captain Jean-Luc Picard took command of the fleet and rallied it for one final attack on the cube. The attack was successful and the cube was destroyed. Prior to its destruction the cube managed to launch one Borg sphere. The sphere continued to Earth where it created a temporal vortex and traveled into the past. Before the vortex collapsed the Enterprise managed to follow the sphere and managed to stop the Borg from disrupting the timeline. (Star Trek: First Contact) While the Federation was victorious the loss of many ships during the battle put a significant strain on Starfleet's resources. This caused some concern among officers as to the Federation's ability to deal with the ever growing threat of the Dominion. (DS9: "In Purgatory's Shadow") The mention of the attack in "In Purgatory's Shadow" creates a continuity error as the events of the episode happen pre-stardate 50564.2 and the movie has the battle occurring around stardate 50893. The Battle of Sector 001 was a confrontation between the United Federation of Planets and the Borg Collective in 2373, when a Borg cube attempted to assimilate Earth. The battle resulted in significant casualties for the Starfleet forces, as they were outgunned.
