Spyglass

A spyglass or telescope is a tool used for looking over long distances, useful on board ships for navigation and looking for land as well as spotting other vessels. Most captains will not be without one while at sea. Going after several clues, the Avatar asked Seggallion in Farthing for the spyglass. Receiving it after correctly answering a question about the planets, the Avatar now had a very useful tool at hand. Watching the sky at night with it, the hero could see the eight planets, each representing a city of Britannia. Three comets symbolized the Shadowlords. Until the Shadowlords were vanquished, a comet over a planet meant that the corresponding city was under attack by a Shadowlord. With all three Shadowlords destroyed, the spyglass lost its usefulness to the Avatar. A spyglass (telescope) nicknamed the "bring-em-closer" is an object used by mariners to magnify the view, kept on one's person to view anything far away. A spy glass is typically composed of a metallic or wooden cylindrical casing, which contains lenses that magnify images from distances that may be hard to see from the human eye itself. Pirates often used a spyglass to spot land or an incoming ship in the distance. Spyglass is Gallant to Spectro's Goofus. He's an eager-beaver go-getter when it comes to espionage and surveillance. He's always on board with whatever sinister scheme Viewfinder cooks up for the Reflector trio, even to the point where he'll cajole the uncooperative Spectro into playing along —- making sure, of course, that Spectro doesn't know too much. Spyglass was a rolled leather tube with glass lenses that made distant places appear closer. It could be unrolled and dismantled. It was an invention from the Burning Sands used by Unicorn scouts and Mantis captains. The glass lenses were crafted at Medinaat al-Salaam. Spyglass is a favored gift in Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening. It gives +10 approval (with diminishing returns), specific to Sigrun. If the spyglass is given to her within the conversation about spyglasses (the item has to be in your inventory), it seems to give 5 less approval points than if the spyglass were given to her outside the conversation (unknown whether or not it is a bug or intentional). In the novels, a spyglass used by V.F.D. is only briefly mentioned in The Slippery Slope. The spyglasses in the Film are seemingly made of solid brass, but in the TV series the spyglasses seem to be made of wood with rotating rings on one half, seemingly used for certain settings or different codes, and navigational compasses or gauges on the other half. The draw-tubes that pull out are made of solid brass with some rotating wheels and numbers, and the top of the spyglass has a cap bearing the V.F.D. insignia. Though the creator of the spyglasses is unknown, a common candidate would probably be Gustav Sebald, as he is known for creating the Sebald Code, which was featured in the film Zombies In The Snow, which Uncle Monty used a spyglass to decode a message hidden within the subtitles of t A spyglass was a valuable item in any Captain's pocket used to see the "stats" of an enemy ship you could see such things as ship name, flag, number of crew, number of cannons, hull damage and sail damage.
