In Siberian mythology, Erlik was an evil spirit who was the first creation of the creator god of the Siberian peoples, but his pride caused him to be banished to the underworld. In Lapp mythology (the Lapps reside in the Laplands in northern Scandinavia), Erlik was the lord of the underworld, who was depicted as a monstrous entity who guarded deceased souls. In Altai mythology (the Altai reside in the center south part of Russia, near Kazakhstan and Mongolia), he was the teacher of sin and was represented sometimes as a bear. Erlik is a guard at High Keep in "Stranger Blood". He is killed by the changer who arrives to take his revenge on the residents. Erlik was active long before the current Marvel time-line, during the era that Conan the Barbarian existed (which was in the distant past, nearing the beginning of human civilisation) - this makes him a very ancient deity, possibly connected to the Elder Gods themselves: however he didn't seem very active in the modern era and as such was mainly an opponent to heroes that existed during Conan's life-time. Erlik was the Hutt Cartel-appointed Governor of Tatooine during the Invasion of Ondos. Prior to his service in the Cartel, Erlik fought as a rebel against the Hutts during the Rim Wars, but he changed his allegiances after the Hutts won and the war ended.

Making his way through the Hutt ranks, Erlik's ambition grew in the hopes of becoming a member of the inner circle of Jabba the Hutt, the leader of the Cartel, on Nal Hutta. Erlik was appointed Governor of Tatooine, making him the personal representative of Jabba on the planet. His brutal rule led the people of Tatooine to call him "Erlik the Exterminator" and the Tatooinians did not forgive him for changing his allegiances after the war. thumb|150px|Erlik Erlik der Flammenlord ist ein Gott von Pathenia in Nord-Hyrkania. Erlik was a harsh deity who believed in hardening humanity's souls and loyalty via trials and deprivation - this earned him the title of "god of evil" amongst those that opposed his ruling style and indeed he often had a demonic presence (though it was never revealed whether this was his true form of merely guises he took in order to intimidate mortals). As well as the ambiguous title of "god of evil" Erlik was a death deity and as such could resurrect the dead as well as grant immortality, regenerative abilities or a "death touch" upon those he favored.
