Naukratis (also spelled Naucratis) was an ancient Greek settlement in the Nile delta region of Egypt. It was re-discovered and excavated by William Flinders Petrie in 1884-1885. In 1938, in his archaeology course at Barnett College, Professor Indiana Jones started the Egyptology section of the class with a reading assignment on the Flinders Petrie's excavation of Naukratis.
