The 404 linked Walsall and Blackheath via West Bromwich. It was operated by National Express West Midlands. There was also an extended working of the route, the 404A, which was an extension of the main route from Blackheath to Cradley Heath and was also operated by National Express West Midlands. This ran to a half hourly frequency. The routes were operated using Scania OmniLinks, new in 2008, at a combined frequency of every six minutes Monday to Saturday. During Saturday and Sunday daytime, the 404A was replaced by an extended version of itself, the 404H, which extended from Cradley Heath to the Merry Hill Centre. This ran to a half hourly frequency throughout the day. There was a shortened variation of the 404 operated by Diamond Bus, which operated only between Walsall and West Bromwich, following the same route as the full length version. It ran to an eight minute Monday to Saturday daytime frequency, using brand new MAN 14.240 MCV eVolutions. These buses have now left the Diamond fleet. In October 2012, Centro completed a full review of services in Sandwell which led to the National Express West Midlands bus routes 404, 404A and 404H and Diamond routes 404E and 417 was changed. All the above services then became a partnership and operates as service 4 National Express West Midlands between Walsall and Blackheath via West Bromwich, 4 Diamond Walsall to West Bromwich via Stone Cross, 4H National Express West Midlands/Diamond between Walsall and Halesowen/Hayley Green via West Bromwich and Blackheath and 4M National Express West Midlands/Diamond between Walsall and Merry Hill via West Bromwich, Blackheath and Cradley Heath.
