Grove City, Ohio was a town of 1500 to 2000 southwest of Columbus and in the middle of a belt of farmland. During Operation Blackbeard, Grove City became the last U.S. stronghold before Columbus, late in the summer of 1941. As such U.S. troops under the command of General Abner Dowling took a desperate defensive stand here. Col. Tom Colleton demonstrated the new Confederate ways of war in taking the town.

n26:abstract
Grove City, Ohio was a town of 1500 to 2000 southwest of Columbus and in the middle of a belt of farmland. During Operation Blackbeard, Grove City became the last U.S. stronghold before Columbus, late in the summer of 1941. As such U.S. troops under the command of General Abner Dowling took a desperate defensive stand here. Col. Tom Colleton demonstrated the new Confederate ways of war in taking the town. When his infantry regiment was stalled by artillery fire from the north side of the town, he radioed for counter-fire. This lessened U.S. fire but didn't stop it. Colleton then radioed for Mules which bombed the artillery into submission. When his infantry began to advance once more, it came under machinegun fire. Unlike the Great War, this did not stall the Confederate advance. A platoon of barrels dealt with the emplacements and a combined force of armor and infantry quickly took Grove City.
