Powerlifting
rdfs:comment
From the 1977 World Powerlifting Championships. hEU1Hyv4rX8 In competition, lifts may be performed equipped or un-equipped (typically referred to as 'raw' lifting). Equipment in this context refers to a supportive bench shirt or squat/deadlift suit or briefs. In some federations, knee wraps are permitted in the equipped but not un-equipped division; in others, they may be used in both equipped and un-equipped lifting. Weight belts, knee sleeves, wrist wraps and special footwear may also be used, but are not considered when distinguishing equipped from un-equipped lifting. A powerlifting competition takes place as follows: Each competitor is allowed three to four attempts on each lift depending on their standing and the organization they are lifting in(usually smallest w-class to heaviest). The lifter’s best valid attempt on each lift counts toward his competition total. If two or more lifters achieve the same total, the lighter lifter ranks above the heavier lifter. Comparisons of lifters and scores across different weight classes can also be made using handicapping systems such as the Wilks formula.

From the 1977 World Powerlifting Championships. hEU1Hyv4rX8 A powerlifting competition takes place as follows: Each competitor is allowed three to four attempts on each lift depending on their standing and the organization they are lifting in(usually smallest w-class to heaviest). The lifter’s best valid attempt on each lift counts toward his competition total. If two or more lifters achieve the same total, the lighter lifter ranks above the heavier lifter. Competitors are judged against other lifters of the same gender, weight class, and age. This helps to ensure that the accomplishments of lifters like Lamar Gant, who deadlifted five times his own weight, are recognized alongside those of Andy Bolton, the current World Powerlifting Organization deadlift world record holder. Comparisons of lifters and scores across different weight classes can also be made using handicapping systems such as the Wilks formula. In competition, lifts may be performed equipped or un-equipped (typically referred to as 'raw' lifting). Competitions take place across the world but mostly in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Iceland, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Ukraine. Powerlifting has been a Paralympic sport (bench press only) since 1984 and, under the IPF, is also a World Games sport. Local, national and international competitions have also been sanctioned by other federations operating independently of the IPF.
