The Second Battle of Carida was a battle in the Galactic Civil War initiated during Operation Shadow Hand. After an extended orbital battle followed by a ground assault, the New Republic captured the planet. However, the Republic flagship Home One was intercepted by a Sovereign-class Star Dreadnought shortly after leaving the system. Although Home One managed to send a distress signal to the nearby Republic fleet, they were unable to reach the area soon enough. In retaliation for the loss of Carida, the Dreadnought destroyed Home One with a blast of its superlaser, killing everyone on board.

The New Republic fleet arrived in time to witness the Star Dreadnought's departure. The loss of Admiral Ackbar was seen by many as a severe blow to the New Republic leadership. Following Ackbar's death, Admiral Dagmar Morlev was promoted to fill his position as Supreme Commander of the Republic fleet.
