The 18th and 19th centuries were a time of Portuguese Renaissance.In the 1750s Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, minister for Jospeh I of Portugal initiated British inspired reforms preparing the empire for industrialization. Later using raw materials from Brazil and Africa Portugal industrialized successfully before its contemporaries Spain and France. Portugal contributed much in the way of the studies of the natural sciences, creating the theory of evolution and climatology. The 20th century brought the strains of keeping such a diverse and advanced global empire together in a society of mass production and consumption. Regional uprisings led to the reformed Portugese Commonwealth.
