Hägar the Horrible is the title and main character of an American comic strip created by cartoonist Dik Browne (1917–1989), and syndicated by King Features Syndicate. It first appeared in February 1973, and was an immediate success. Since Browne's retirement in 1988 (and subsequent death), his son Chris Browne has continued the strip. As of 2010, Hägar is distributed to 1,900 newspapers in 58 countries and translated into 13 languages. The strip is a caricature and loose interpretation of medieval Scandinavian life. Hägar the Horrible is the title character of the comic strip created by Dik Browne in 1973. Appearing in over 1,900 newspapers in 58 countries, it follows the adventures of the Viking Hägar, his familiy, and his crew. The strip has remained popular since its debut, and has inspired its own brand of soda ("Hägar the Horrible Cola") and animated special. The strip was referenced in the Muppet Babies episode Comic Capers. The Babies are making up a story from cut out panels from the Sunday comics, wandering through Blondie, Crock, Alley Oop and Peanuts (among others).
