Elaine Burns was a forensic anthropologist with the Smithsonian who helped Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his team investigate the death of a United States Marine Security Guard and Staff Sergeant Warren Sorrow. Unfortunately, she was later revealed to be part of a rogue group responsible for Sorrow's death and held Donald Mallard and Ziva David hostage, intending to kill them. However just when it looked like Burns was going to get away with murder, Ziva who the Doctor had underestimated from the very beginning and was also about to shoot managed to get the upper hand by producing a knife from one of her boots and throwing it at Burns, the blade of which struck Burns in the chest, piercing her heart and killing her instantly. In the process, Ziva also managed to take the remaining two rogue Soldiers into custody without breaking a sweat while also saving herself and Ducky from death. This earned her the respect and admiration of Gibbs and DiNozzo who permanently accepted her into their ranks.
