Were
rdfs:comment
Weres are one of the least-understood Creature races on Furrae. They have three forms, furre, human and feral animal which they are able to shift between at will. A furtive race, they prefer to remain hidden and are essentially undetectable from Beings, having a similar lifespan. Azlan has claimed on the DMFA forum that at least one 'closet Were' has appeared in the strip so far. There are myths that being bitten by a Were can result in becoming one, but since it is a genetic trait, this is patently false and most likely a rumour started by the Weres themselves in order to deter intruders. Were is an old community term that is short for werewolf or any were-creature, such as werecat, werebear, or werebat. A person who says “I am a Were.” means that he or she is an animal in human form. This term was used by the members of alt.horror.werewolves (AHWW) beginning in 1993 and up until the term "Therian" became more popular around 2005. The term is "outdated" but it is still commonly used, especially be older members of the community. Weres (short for werewolf or were-beast) are magical creatures which traditionally change physical form involuntarily at regular intervals, particularly on the night of the full moon. This change traditionally brings with it instincts so strong they override any consideration of conscious will as well as an insatiable hunger for meat. Traditionally weres are cursed humans ("Were" or "wer" is a Germanic word meaning "man", literally "who"). Also according to tradition weres heal quickly and are weak to the element silver, which is supposed to be deadly if it enters the body. Recently, though, there have been a great many variations on the same idea.

n18:abstract
It should be noted that Weres and Therians are the same thing. In the early 2000's, the community felt a need to move away from the "Hollywood werewolf' stereotypes. There was also an increasing problem with role-players claiming to be 'weres', and causing a massive amount of confusions in the community. Prominent communities including the Awereness Forums (Therianthropy.org) and Werelist decided that the term "therian" should be used instead.
