The Ministry of Science and Technology was the agency of the Golden Empire charged with conducting government research into new technologies of vital interest to the state, such as weapons, starships, and communications. When such research was already being conducted at lesser expense (or with greater efficiency) by private groups, the Ministry was also authorized to subsidize the research efforts. Supervised by the Minister of Science and Technology, who sat on the Grand Council of the Golden Empire, the Ministry also maintained the standards for all weights and measures used in the Empire. The Royal Observatory also fell into this agency's jurisdiction. The Ministry formally sponsored the annual Queen's Symposium from 111 ABY onward. The Ministry of Science and Technology (of the People's Republic of China) (MOST) is responsible for the National Basic Research Program, the National High-Tech Research &Development (R&D) Program, and the Science & Technology (S&T) Enabling Program, as well as compiling and implementing plans for national laboratories, bases for innovation, and national S&T programs.
