World In Shadow
rdfs:comment
World In Shadow is a realistic fiction novel by James Martel I published in 2526. The novel addresses the perilous state of humanity following the outbreak of the Human-Covenant War and speculates on humanity's future as a species. The plot predominantly follows that of various civilians over a time period of twenty-one years, as humanity's colonies are wiped out one by one until they are reduced to near-extinction with the glassing of Earth in 2546. Although not considered a war novel, parts of the plot does touch on fictional depictions of military figures, including that of Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson and Vice Admiral Preston Cole.

World In Shadow was the first published on October 18, 2526 and sold over 50 million copies galaxy-wide in its circulation. However, the Office of Naval Intelligence quickly caught word of the novel, and immediately assigned Section Two to halt its distribution and destroy all units that were sold. Nonetheless, some copies made their way to many of the more discreet or Insurrection-controlled colonies; a few owners of the novel hid and preserved their copies also. Despite the mass recall for World In Shadow, its initial release established Martel as a well-known author and he would later go on to publish many other successful stories. The novel would also lead to Martel securing a position as one of ONI's analysts regarding war-related matters. World In Shadow was re-released to the general public with ONI's permission on April 5, 2553. It sold over 37 million units on Earth, and approximately 110 million units galaxy-wide. The accuracy to which Martel predicted the path that the Human-Covenant War would take became a widely discussed topic among authors, philosophers, and even scientists. World In Shadow was made into a film in 2557. The novel received widespread acclaim from most critics and readers following its re-release, and it was awarded several accolades and distinctions in the 2550s. In 2555, Martel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. In 2559, World In Shadow was ranked #17 under The 100 Most Influential Books Ever Written. In 2599, it won the Novel of the Century award.
