It was originally a subsidiary of the bus manufacturer East Lancashire Coachbuilders, called North West Bus & Coach Repairs and based in Blackburn. After East Lancs went into administration in August 2007, the business was bought by the Darwen Group and North West Bus and Coach Repairs was renamed to Darwen North West. In early 2008, as part of Darwen's reverse takeover of Optare, Darwen North West was sold to a local Blackburn investor.
