Foil
rdfs:comment
A Foil sword is a very light and fast sword, capable of inflicting devastating damage. There are two varieties of foil in use today: the nonelectric foil, known as "dry" or "steam," and the electrically scored foil. The components common to both varieties are the pommel, grip, guard, thumb pad, and blade. Jewelers often put shiny metal foil underneath a gem to make the stone shine brighter. A literary foil is someone who highlights another character's trait, usually by contrast, but sometimes by competing with him, hanging a lampshade, making snarky remarks, or egging him on. These are far from the only possible pairings, however, as virtually any story with multiple characters can contrast the characters to show greater depths to them, regardless of what side they are on in the good versus evil equation. Good versus evil doesn't have to come into the picture at all. The foil is one of the seventeen sword types available to players in the game. All new pirates start with a foil in their booty panel. It is produced at iron mongers. The foil is the only weapon that can be purchased from an iron monger without paying a delivery fee of doubloons on the doubloon oceans. Foils do have some good uses. They are a very cheap sword which makes it favored by PoE-strapped pillagers. They are more than adequate for fighting NPPs. Tournaments regularly use foils as a way to even the odds so that everyone receives the same mediocre sword. Perhaps the elven Rapier, Foil and Epeé should be imagined rather als slender variants of the falchon like the swords Hadhafang and Gwemegil. A foil was a type of sword. Examples included the Swiftcut foil and the Twenchok foil. Foil is an underrated texture, not being used by the majority of popular developers or builders. One popular use of the foil texture, however, is Dummiez's well known game, The Quarry. Dummiez uses the foil texture as a texture for a few of the ores on his game. Foil is an Enhancing Magic spell from Final Fantasy XI exclusive to Rune Fencers level 58 or higher. It increases evasion against monster TP-based attacks and other special attacks. n10:abstract
A Foil sword is a very light and fast sword, capable of inflicting devastating damage. Song: Foil Running Time: 2:22 Year: 2014 Album: Mandatory Fun Parody of: Royals by Lorde Lyrics: Foil Video: Yes Watch Forum: Forum Discussion Page The foil is one of the seventeen sword types available to players in the game. All new pirates start with a foil in their booty panel. It is produced at iron mongers. The foil is the only weapon that can be purchased from an iron monger without paying a delivery fee of doubloons on the doubloon oceans. As it is such a cheap sword, given as starting equipment, and often the cheapest that one can be purchased, it also has one of the worst drop patterns, especially when making sprinkle attacks. It however, has a much better drop pattern than the stick and some think that it is better than the dirk and/or long sword as well. Foils do have some good uses. They are a very cheap sword which makes it favored by PoE-strapped pillagers. They are more than adequate for fighting NPPs. Tournaments regularly use foils as a way to even the odds so that everyone receives the same mediocre sword. The foil does have one unusual strength in PvP fights. Sometimes a foil's attacks will create fused blocks at the very top of columns 1+2 and/or 5+6. A sword strike that would normally go into these columns will then be placed in the center instead. This can turn a normally non-fatal 2 wide sword strike into an instakill. To defend against this, one can try to prevent the fused blocks from forming at the top of the screen (e.g., adding a non-red block to the top of the leftmost column if the left side is nearly full with red sprinkles) or one can attempt to eliminate the fused blocks with breakers. There are two varieties of foil in use today: the nonelectric foil, known as "dry" or "steam," and the electrically scored foil. The components common to both varieties are the pommel, grip, guard, thumb pad, and blade. The nonelectric foil has a blunted end, typically produced by folding over the tip of the blade, that is capped with a plastic or rubber knob. Nonelectric foils are primarily used for practice, although some organizations still fence competitively using dry foils. In the United States, the American Fencing League is an organization that holds only visually judged, non-electric tournaments. The electric foil contains a socket underneath the guard that connects to the scoring apparatus via the body cord and a wire that runs down a channel cut into the top of the blade. The tip of the electric foil terminates in a button assembly that generally consists of a barrel, plunger, spring, and retaining screws. The circuit is a "normally closed" one, meaning that at rest there is always a complete power circuit. Depressing the tip breaks this circuit, and the scoring apparatus illuminates an appropriate light: white for hits not on the valid target area, or either red or green representing hits on the valid target area. The pommel, a type of threaded fastener used to fasten blade, guard, plug, and grip assemblies together, is specific to the type of grip that is used. There are two types of grips used for foils: straight grips with long, external pommels, comprising the French, Italian, and Spanish varieties, and orthopedic, or pistol grips, which are designed to fix the hand in a specific position and have pommels that fit into a countersink in the back of the grip. Electric foil plugs are fixed so that the body cord plugs into the weapon along the inside of the wrist. There are two varieties in use today: the two-prong variety which has unequal diameter prongs and is held in place by a retaining clip, and the single-prong Bayonette which twist-locks into place. Foil guards are limited to a diameter of 9.5 to 12 cm in international competition. Foil blades are made of tempered and annealed, low-carbon steel and are designed to bend upon striking an opponent in order to both prevent injuries and breakage of the blade. For international competition maraging steel is required. The foil blade is no more than 90 cm in length with a blunted (or foiled) tip. The overall weight of the full assembled weapon is at most 500 g, and the maximum length of the assembled weapon is 110 cm. The blade itself is subdivided into 3 regions: the foible, or weak, at the last third of the blade near the tip, the medium, and the forte, or strong, is the third of the blade near the guard. Inside of the grip is the tang which is threaded at the end to allow the pommel to fasten the foil assembly together. Where an Italian grip is used a ricosso extends from under the guard, inside of the grip's quillons, into the tang. Foil is an Enhancing Magic spell from Final Fantasy XI exclusive to Rune Fencers level 58 or higher. It increases evasion against monster TP-based attacks and other special attacks. (with Haggle: 0) * Buy: 4D * Sell: 2D The Foil is a component in The Last Stand: Dead Zone. Jewelers often put shiny metal foil underneath a gem to make the stone shine brighter. A literary foil is someone who highlights another character's trait, usually by contrast, but sometimes by competing with him, hanging a lampshade, making snarky remarks, or egging him on. Sidekicks often serve as foils to the hero by being something the hero himself is not (a calm and pragmatic sidekick when the hero is hotheaded, for example). In the classic good-guy versus bad guy scenario, both the hero and villain can each be considered the other's foil, in that each acts to show how the other behaves in certain situations. These are far from the only possible pairings, however, as virtually any story with multiple characters can contrast the characters to show greater depths to them, regardless of what side they are on in the good versus evil equation. Good versus evil doesn't have to come into the picture at all. Sometimes a foil is a flat secondary character that comes on stage, sparks a response, then fades from the story. More often, though, the foil is a recurring character that has a personality, or an opinion of things, that is different from another recurring character. This character can be the opposite of the character in many ways -- or perhaps very, very, very similar, except for a crucial difference. Many intentional foils are depicted as physical contrasts to the main character. Thin vs. fat and tall vs. short are among the most common ways of setting up a contrast. Similarly, when the hero's Love Interest is blonde, the villainess tends to have dark or red hair; when the villainess is blond, the hero's Love Interest tends to be dark or red haired. As implied earlier, virtually any two characters or character types can serve as foils to each other if they're put together properly and a little good writing goes into them. However, there is a surprisingly large number of character types that exist primarily for the purpose of being a foil, usually to the main character, or in the case of a set of characters, to each other. If you're feeling a little poetic and look around at your surroundings enough, you'll probably discover that this trope is a bit of Truth in Television. Nothing to do with fencing or the preferred headgear of a Conspiracy Theorist. See also Duo Tropes.
