Also called grigri, it is a voodoo amulet that began in Africa. It is believed to ward off evil, bring luck, and in some countries used as birth control. It is a small cloth bag inscribed with verses from Islam's Qur'an while containing small objects inside it and would also have a doll symbolizing the wearer attached to the pouch. It is carried around by on the person. When it was brought over to the United States by African slaves it was used in Voodoo and the practices changed, soon being used to make curses and bad luck. Though Haiti would still have it as a good luck amulet. The word is believed to originate from the African word juju(meaning "fetish") or the French word joujou(meaning "charm").
