Dies hatte den Vorteil, dass sich kein wachhabender Soldat auf sein Scutum stützen und dabei einschlafen konnte. Die Höhe des Schildes betrug ca. 110 Zentimeter. Der Schild bestand aus Sperrholzplatten, die nach einem speziellen Verfahren miteinander verleimt wurden. Es waren insgesamt drei Lagen. Am Ende wurde noch eine Ochsenhaut auf das Schild gespannt und geölt. Das sollte die anfälligen Schilde vor der Witterung schützen. Vor allem in nördlichen Regionen (Gallien, Germanien oder Britanien) regnete und schneite es oft. Bei der Auswahl des scutum war jeder Legionär sehr sorgfältig, denn schließlich hielten ihn nur diese drei Schichten Sperrholz (entweder aus Eiche oder Buche), welche mit einer Tierhaut überzogen waren, von einem blutgierigen, mit der Axt um sich schwingenden Barbaren ab. Deshalb kauften die Legionäre auch meistens nur neue Schilder.
