Set in 1905, Fiddler on the Roof takes place in Anatevka, a small Jewish village in Russia. The story resolves around the dairyman Tevye and his attempts to preserve his family's traditions in the face of a changing world. When his eldest daughter Tzeitel begs him to let her marry a poor tailor rather than the middle-aged butcher that he has already chosen for her, Tevye must choose between his daughter's happiness and those beloved traditions that keep the outside world at bay. Meanwhile, there are other forces at work in Anatevka, dangerous forces which threaten to destroy the very life he is trying to preserve Fiddler on the Roof is a 1971 American musical comedy-drama film. Fiddler on the Roof is a long-running Broadway musical, based on the Jewish Tevye stories of Sholem Aleichem, first debuting in 1964 and running through 1972. Many Broadway revivals have been staged since, the most recent occurring in 2015. It has been adapted into an acclaimed 1971 film. The plot focuses on the trials and tribulations of Tevye the milkman, his many daughters, and the entire village of Anatevka. Fiddler on the Roof is a popular musical from the 1960s, based on a set of stories by Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem (pen name for Solomon Rabinovich). Set in the shtetl of Anatevka, in the Pale of Settlement of the Russian Empire, just before the Revolution of 1905, it tells the story of Tevye, a milkman with five daughters: Tzeitel, Hodel, Chava, Schprintze, and Bielke. The plot centers on Tevye and Golde's efforts to find husbands for their daughters, but their daughters break tradition by marrying for love rather than having their marriages arranged by Yente, the town matchmaker. The original Broadway production starred Zero Mostel in the role that would make him famous, but producer-director Norman Jewison refused to cast him in the movie, feeling that his performance was too over the top, and chose Chaim Topol, star of the London production, instead. The movie was released in 1971. Originally, Jerome Robbins, the director-choreographer of the original musical, had shown an interest in directing the film as well, but the production company, Mirisch Pictures, refused to even consider the idea, due to the difficulties they had when Robbins was assigned to co-direct and choreograph West Side Story. (Robbins had spent so much time shooting and re-shooting scenes in his quest for perfection, that by the time he had completed about 60% of the picture, the film had gone $1,000,000 over budget and six months behind schedule. He was summarily fired from the film shoot and producer and co-director Robert Wise completed the film alone.) Fiddler on the Roof remains a popular choice for high schools to this day. After leaving the Temple Beth Thupporting Actor in "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein", Peter recalls another Jewish musical moment when they went to see William Shatner star in Fiddler on the Roof at the Providence Performing Arts Center. After using Quagmire and Joe for target practice while making them sing "Makin' Whoopee" at the Quahog Theater in "Lottery Fever", Mort Goldman appears onstage and announces he's there to audition for Fiddler on the Roof. The musical opened at the Imperial Theater on Broadway on September 22, 1964, starring Zero Mostel as Tevye. Fiddler on the Roof ran for two thousand and thirty performances in its initial West-End run and was revived there three times. Fiddler on the Roof continues to be regularly performed by amateur and professional companies throughout the world. A film version directed by Norman Jewison, which follows the original stage version very closely, was released in 1971. Topol starred as Tevye, as he had previously done in the fist London production. The film won three Academy Awards. Fiddler on the Roof is a production, and this is a general overview of that production.
