The Freedom Party is a political party in the Commonwealth of Rutania with headquarters in the capital city of Port Nelson in Khodor. The Freedom Party was founded in 2064.The political platform of the Freedom Party reflects the party's particular brand of libertarianism, favouring minimally regulated, laissez-faire markets, low taxation levels and strong civil liberties with a strong accent on government accountability to the people. The Freedom Party was a pro-independence political party formed in 2555 by former Insurrectionist pilot Aleksander Makosky. Originally formed on the colony of Mamore, the Party quickly gained ground amongst the majority of less radical pro-independence citizens, even having one of their own elected as a planetary representative to the Unified Earth Government House of Representatives on Earth. However, this success came at a cost. Due to the Freedom Party's pro-independence rhetoric, even though it was non violent, the group was targeted by the Office of Naval Intelligence and even Insurrectionist groups, the latter of whom usually felt that the Freedom Party was too moderate in gaining independence. The most infamous operation against the Freedom Party was on December 18th, 2562, when, at a gathering to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the nuking of Far Isle, Freedom Party chairman Aleksander Makosky was targeted for assassination by both undercover SPARTAN-III supersoldiers and Insurrectionist operatives in a debacle that left fourteen civilians dead, and scores more wounded in the crossfire. After this incident, Makosky secretly instituted an armed wing of the party to protect himself and other officials in public from assassination. Despite defamation and smear campaigns against the Freedom Party, as late as 2610, the Party was still alive and well, though it still had yet to succeed in gaining a colony independence.
