In 2001, a customer inquired in Black Books if a copy of Schubert's biography was available, much to Bernard Black's annoyance. However, this customer was accidently locked in the shop and was seen two weeks later, clutching the book after finally finding it. Franz Peter Schubert (* 31. Franz Peter Schubert ( 31 January 1797 – 19 November 1828) was an Austrian composer. Schubert died before his 32nd birthday, but was extremely prolific during his lifetime. His output consists of over six hundred secular vocal works (mainly Lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music and a large body of chamber and piano music. Appreciation of his music while he was alive was limited to a relatively small circle of admirers in Vienna, but interest in his work increased significantly in the decades following his death. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and other 19th-century composers discovered and championed his works. Today, Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers of the late Classical and early Romantic eras and is one of the most frequently performed composers of the early nineteenth century. Franz Seraphicus Peter Schubert (January 31, 1797 – November 19, 1828) was an Austrian composer. He wrote some 600 Lieder, eight completed symphonies, the famous "Unfinished Symphony", liturgical music, operas, and a large body of chamber and solo piano music. He is particularly noted for his original melodic and harmonic writing. While Schubert had a close circle of friends and associates who admired his work (including his teacher Antonio Salieri, and the prominent singer Johann Michael Vogl), wider appreciation of his music during his lifetime was limited at best. He was never able to secure adequate permanent employment, and for most of his career he relied on the support of friends and family. Interest in Schubert's work increased dramatically in the decades following his death. Franz Schubert was born on 31 January 1797 in Vienna into humble circumstances, and he remained in a state of poverty for the rest of his life. Thus, on 31 January 1829, he might have been celebrating in equally humble circumstances his 32nd birthday, had he not died about two months earlier. Schubert had been intended to become either a sewing machine or an insurance clerk. Eventually, however, he ended up being dead. Schubert spent most of his life trying to scrape a living as a composer. This was not easy, as Schubert was in the unfortunate position of being a contemporary of composer and music mogul Ludwig van Beethoven, who practically dominated the music market of his time, leaving little to no room for other composers. It was therefore only after Beethoven's death that Schubert stood a chance of somehow establishing himself in the music world. However, Schubert died only one and a half years after Beethoven, and these one and a half years did not make any significant difference for Schubert's career. Around 1820, Schubert contracted syphilis from himself. In addition to that, he began to suffer from typhoid fever at some point. These diseases caused Schubert a great deal of pain, so much pain that he contemplated suicide in late 1828. He spent many hours pondering what a good way to kill himself would be. He need not have bothered, however; he died naturally from one of his diseases on November 19 that year. An Austrian composer of Classical Music. Born in 1797, Schubert had early exposure to music thanks to his family and eventually his talent caught the eye of Antonio Salieri (who was best remembered as Mozart's arch-enemy due to media's mispresentation). An extremely prolific worker despite his short life (he died at the age of 31), Schubert's talent was admired by his friends, who often gathered to listen to his works in the so-called Schubertiad, but he did not achieve significant recognition until after his death. Ludwig Van Beethoven was his idol, and Schubert was a torchbearer in the master's funeral. Schubert is best known for his songs (also known as Lieder), especially "Ave Maria" and "Serenade".
