The 2002 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1, 2002, and lasted until November 30, 2002. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. Because 2002 was an El Niño year, few storms were notable, much less strong. There were a total of 12 storms, 4 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes. The 4 hurricanes are below the long-term average of 6 hurricanes. Notable storms of the season include Hurricane Isidore, which struck the Yucatan Peninsula as a major hurricane, then struck southeastern Louisiana as a strong tropical storm. Tropical Storm Josephine is notable for its formation at a very high latitude. Hurricane Kyle meandered in the Atlantic for nearly three weeks, and is notable for that. Hurricane Lili reached Category 4 strength before rapidly weakening to a Category 1 hurricane as it made landfall in west-central Louisiana. As is usually the case in El Niño years, tropical cyclone formation was supressed below 25°N, with only three of the season's 12 storms forming below that latitude. 2002 is also notable because it is currently tied with 2007 for the most amount of tropical cyclones to form in the month of September, with eight. Also, 2002 ended early, with the last storm forming on September 21, a rare occurence. This was the first time a tropical storm (a tropical depression did develop, but not a tropical storm) did not develop during the month of October since the 1994 season. This was also the last time such an event occured until the 2006 season.
