"Annex" is a verb meaning "to incorporate some territory into another geo-political entity." A region that has undergone this process is said to have been "annexed". This often happens during wartime or as an act of military aggression. For example, Iraq invaded and annexed Kuwait in 1990, leading to the first Gulf War. Usually the term implies that the territory and population being annexed is the smaller and weaker of the two merging entities. It is also generally implied that the territory being annexed does not fully agree to the process. (When two regions willingly want to merge together it is usually called an "amalgamation").
