Shirakawa-go（白川郷；しらかわごう）is a world heritage site and the basis of the village of Hinamizawa portrayed in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni series. The Hinamizawa Dam Conflict and the sound novel illustration of the dam area are actually based off of the building of the Miboro Dam, which in the end, did result in 4 villages, one temple, and 250 houses being submerged underwater. Two large cherry blossom trees were recovered from the submerged temple and placed in Shirakawa-go, and locals say that in the spring, when the cherry blossoms are blooming, each flower represents a memory of the people from the drowned villages.
