Derek Brookner was an out-of-work actor working as a stripper for the company "Mucho Man" and the strip club "The Package Store". Although Derek was apparently highly regarded by his classmates at drama school - where he dated fellow student Camille Roberts - his career after leaving school was relatively poor, his most noticeable role being a brief appearance on "America's Most Dangerous Criminals" as bike gang leader Billy Grimm that resulted in Grimm being arrested and sent to prison for a time.

However, Derek's luck apparently turned when he was hired as an escort for an upper-class party and met former model Rebecca Dalton, the two developing a relationship for a time, despite Dalton being significantly older than Derek. During their time together, Derek was recruited by Dalton's lawyer, Michael Grant, as part of a plan to set up fake real estate deals. Derek posed as Jesse Mandalay, the public face of the company, to convince investors to give him the money for various fake investments and deposit them in the accounts of the fictional Sunfire Limited, the company's accounts being kept in Dalton's name. Although the scam was working out for both men, when Grimm threatened vengeance on Derek after he was released from prison, Derek was forced to withdraw $25,000 from the Sunfire accounts to pay Grimm off as compensation for Grimm's time in prison. Being naturally unable to report the 'theft' to the police, Grant killed Derek in revenge, but his murder was exposed when Castle and Beckett determined Derek's connection to Sunfire, while also noting that Dalton was out of the country when most of the deposits were made.
