To keep him safe and entertained, Barash was left with sophisticated technology which combines functions of holodecks and neural scanners to allow him to create anything he desired. Still, after countless years of solitude, Barash felt he needed someone real to interact with and thus faked strange signals from the planet in order to lure a passing spaceship into sending an away team to investigate. This spaceship happened to be the Federation flag ship USS Enterprise-D and Barash secretly kidnapped Commander William T. Riker and created an elaborate illusion for Riker to experience. Assuming the illusory form of a young Human, Barash pretended to be Riker's son and that the Commander was living sixteen years in the future and affected by a virus-induced amnesia. When the scenario started to show some plot holes, Barash replaced it with an adventurous Romulan scheme, but was ultimately unable to fool Riker for long. After revealing the truth, Barash showed his real appearance and assured that his intentions were good and he thought Riker would be happy with that new life. The commander forgave him and offered to take him along in the Enterprise, thus ending Barash's exile. It is reasonable to assume that Barash was taken to live in a Federation colony or station after that. Barash was a male alien in the 24th century from a previously inhabited planet. As a child, his planet was invaded, and all were killed, except for Barash and his mother. His mother hid him on Alpha Onias III, where she hoped their race's enemies would never find him. She installed neural scanners and holographic projectors in a cave for Barash to live. They could read his mind and fulfill his desires and needs. However, the fantasies the scanners created were no substitute for real interaction with other sentient beings, and he became very lonely. In early 2367, the USS Enterprise-D was in the area and detected the energy probes from Alpha Onias III. Commander William T. Riker led an away team to the cavern. Barash decided to trap Riker in a complex holographic fantasy in the hope that he would keep him company. The members of the away team were overcome by volcanic gases. Lieutenant Worf and Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge were beamed back to the Enterprise-D, but Riker was trapped on the planet. Using the neural scanners, Barash created a version of the Enterprise-D now sixteen years into the future into which Riker awoke. Dr. Crusher claimed that he had been infected by Altarian encephalitis and had lost all memories since Alpha Onias III. He was now captain of the Enterprise-D and a single parent with one slightly troublesome child, "Jean-Luc Riker", the role that Barash assumed. "Admiral" Picard then arrived on a Romulan warbird with a diplomatic delegation. Riker was to complete the final peace accords with the Romulans, which he had been working on ever since the Enterprise-D rescued a damaged Romulan ship. Although Riker began to accept his new circumstances and give the young "Jean-Luc" attention, the simulation quickly began to fall apart as the neural scanner technology was not able to keep up with Riker. In the simulation, the Enterprise-D computer was much too slow and the senior staff were unable to answer Riker's questions about the previous sixteen years. Moreover, a recording of his wife revealed Minuet, a former holographic fantasy of Riker's. Barash attempted a different reality when Riker confronted the characters. This illusion then gave way to another, in which Riker was imprisoned in a Romulan laboratory. Barash stayed in the form of the child, but now called "Ethan". Riker and "Ethan" plotted an escape, but Riker figured out this second deception when "Ethan" accidentally called Tomalak "ambassador", a rank he held only in the first illusion. Barash then revealed his true nature to Riker. Will offered him safety and companionship aboard the Enterprise-D, and the two transported back to the ship. (TNG: "Future Imperfect" ) Barash was played by background actress Dana Tjulander who received no credit for her appearance. The costume was sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay and later again on Propworx.com. [1] [2] Barash's true form bore a strong resemblance to the "Grey aliens" of UFO folklore. Barash was a male of an unknown insectoid species, born sometime in the mid 24th century. Early in his life, an unknown foe invaded Barash's homeworld and his mother brought him to hide on the planet Alpha Onias III. He was left with an advanced holographic environment generator, equipped with neural scanners which could create scenarios from his own thoughts. However, this proved poor substitute for real companionship. In the year 2367, the Federation starship USS Enterprise-D visited Alpha Onias III. Barash prevented the away team leader, Commander William Riker, from beaming back to the ship, and created a holographic scenario in which Riker had lost sixteen years of memories. In those sixteen years, Riker had been promoted to captain of the Enterprise, married, and become father to a son, Jean-Luc Riker, a role Barash himself adopted. Riker eventually realized the scenario, and "Jean-Luc", were not as they appeared, and Barash finally admitted his deception. Learning the young alien's story and motivations, Riker offered to take Barash off Alpha Onias and back to the Federation, an offer Barash accepted. (TNG episode: "Future Imperfect") During his time aboard the Enterprise, Barash befriended much of the senior staff, including Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Dr. Beverly Crusher, as well as Wesley Crusher, who taught Barash to play parrises squares. Shortly after, Barash was brought to Starbase 718, and the offices of the Federation Displaced Persons Agency. During the month he spent there, Barash was cared for by the Andorian zhen in charge of the DPA office. He also tried to assist the base commander, Admiral Sternberg and her crew, in determining his origins, but they were unable to do so, concluding his people had likely originated from somewhere in Romulan space. He later was relocated to Earth, and a youth community home in Ho Chi Minh City. There he became a mentor to younger children, and as an adult took on a formal role within the DPA, helping in the refugee crises following the establishment of the Demilitarized Zone, and during the Federation-Klingon War of 2372-2373 and the Dominion War. Following the Borg Invasion of 2381, Barash, now a Director in the Paris office of the DPA, recruited Dr. Crusher to lead a fact-finding mission to a refugee camp on the planet Pacifica. Other team members he recruited were sociologist Meron Byxthar, civil rights attorney Paul Dillingham, and Starfleet engineer Thur chim Gliv. Unfortunately, Barash was unable, once Crusher reported back, to send any immediate additional assistance. (TNG novel: Losing the Peace) In 2386, Barash was to travel to Deep Space 9 to meet with several individuals from the Dominion. (DS9 novel: The Long Mirage)
