Each pamphlet contains one of a few somewhat funny messages, and does not disappear after reading. They also apparently don't go through Literacy check, thus reading them always succeeds but does not train Literacy. Typical messages are:

Since they can be obtained in high quantities and are not generated normally, pamphlets can be quite handy in item polymorphing. Alternatively, they can be dipped into uncursed to create blank scrolls which can be used with magical writing sets.
