Captain Gan Laikan was a Starfleet line officer who served during the 23rd century. Laikan was the commanding officer of the USS Asimov from 2255 to at least 2265. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era) In later life, Laikan became a jurist on the Federation Supreme Court. In the early 24th century, he served at least one term as President of the United Federation of Planets. (TNG Slings and Arrows e-book: Enterprises of Great Pitch and Moment; TNG novel: Articles of the Federation) He was the second Centaurian to do so, after Richard Lorvahl a century previously. (FASA RPG: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual Agent's Orientation Sourcebook) Gan Laikan was a male Centauran from Alpha Centauri who lived in the late 23rd and early 24th centuries. He was a member of Starfleet in the early part of his life, eventually rising to the rank of captain. He took command of the USS Asimov in 2255 for its first voyage with him as captain. He is remembered for discovering more class M planets then any other starship captain in the 23rd century. (Last Unicorn RPG module: All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook) Following the end of his Starfleet career, he was appointed to the Federation Supreme Court. After several years on the court, he ran for President of the United Federation of Planets, and was successfully elected. At age eight, Jean-Luc Picard took a school trip to the Palais de la Concorde, and had looked forward to meeting President Laikan. Unfortunately, Laikan was vacationing on Alpha Centauri at the time, and the class was instead received by Laikan's Denobulan chief of staff. (TNG - Slings and Arrows eBook: Enterprises of Great Pitch and Moment) The story of Picard's school trip is repeated in the Star Trek: Myriad Universes novel A Gutted World. Laikan died sometime prior to 2380. (ST novel: Articles of the Federation) He is remembered as a great Centauran scientist, Starfleet officer, and politician, and is held up as a role-model for Centauran Starfleet officers. (Decipher RPG module: Starfleet Operations Manual) Slings and Arrows confirms Laikan was in office as of 2313, and was Thelian's immediate predecessor.
