Pan-American Confederation (Cruenta Humanitas)
rdfs:comment
A union of the still largely sovereign states of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, the Central American Commonwealth, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela the Pan-American Confederation, or la Confederación Panamericana, is a socio-economic bloc much like the former EU or the current East Asian Association – indeed it was the first to arise following the New EU, created in 2054 in response to growing native economic power, the conflicts wracking Central and Southern America between 2040s and 2050s and the perceived cultural imperialism of the USA.

It was only with its formation that the continent was finally able to crawl out from under the sphere of influence of the USA, allowing current economic giants such as Brazil and Mexico to finally flourish. The mid-21st century saw the collapse of several South American nations, but the Confederacion was a force for stability in the region and organised the administration of the regions under various member state governments and help form the UN. Despite the strength of the federacy there is great disparity across the continent – Brazil and Mexico dominate the economy contributing about two thirds of the total GDP and almost a third of the populace remains devastated by the Climate Change consequences – the sorry remains of the Amazon are encased by huge climate control greenhouses. States formerly occupied by UN's forces (Bolivia, Ecuador and Paraguay) have been given over to farming, mineral ore mines and sprawling conurbations, many of them unplanned and hastily thrown together. This contrasts with the highly planned, modern cities of affluent southern Chile and Argentina forced to accept excess population influxes from elsewhere. However, there has been a great deal of progress towards solidarity – the entire region speaks Spanish as a first language (Brazil made a fairly rapid transition as Portuguese more-or-less died out both in South America and Europe with the formation of Iberia) leading to Spanish now having a greater number of native speakers than English, although as lingua franca English continues to reign supreme only strengthened by positive feedback. Both economically and politically the Confederation has little power on a global level, but it is more-or-less entirely self-sufficient and is capable of providing a high standard of living for its inhabitants, following the European format of good public services and a well-funded welfare state. Its main trade partner is the US. The region has a somewhat unusually high level of influence in space for it controls both European and American access to the Panam/Europa Orbital Elevator, just off the coast of French Guyana and directly administrates the Amazonia Beanstalk.
