n28:abstract
Carl Scarborough (born July 3, 1914 in Benton, Illinois - died May 30, 1953 in Speedway, Indiana) was an American racing driver who contested two Indianapolis 500 races in 1951 and 1953. In the first of these, Scarborough retired with a broken axle having set the 4th best time in qualifying. In the 1953 event, several drivers had to be relieved by a substitute during the race, due to very high temperatures on raceday. Among these was Scarborough who was suffering severe heat exhaustion and a body temperature of 104°F (40°C). After being relieved by Bob Scott, Scarborough was taken to the in-field medical center where he died. The car was later brought home by Scott in 12th. The death of Scarborough was the second fatality of the event, after Indy veteran, Chet Miller, was killed in an accident in a pre-race practice session.
