Charles Daniel "Carl" Smith (October 14, 1918 - December 7, 2001) was an American Democratic politician known for a life of service in the state of Maryland, where he sat in the State Senate from 1953 to 1959, served as the Baltimore District Attorney from 1959 to 1963, Attorney General of Maryland from 1963 to 1967 and as Governor of Maryland from 1967 until 1975. Smith is best known for serving on the 1972 Democratic Presidential ticket as the running mate for the liberal Dennis Hayward, being a moderate counterweight. The Hayward-Smith ticket lost 347-261 in the electoral college to Clyde Dawley and Alex Droughns. Smith crossed party lines when he as appointed as a federal judge for the District of Maryland in 1981 by Nationalist President Elizabeth Shannon and remained in that position
