She was a lawyer and held themselves mainly engaged in justice (civil and family law, legal assistance), but also with emancipation and public housing. Vargas was a member of the House of representatives for nine years, in the period from 1989 to 1998. Before they became member of Parliament, she was active in the Red Women, a women's organization in the periphery of the Dutch Labour Party. Of this organization was Van der Burg the last President.

Maria Martha (Mieke) van der Burg (Almelo, August 6, 1945) is a former Dutch politician of the Dutch Labour Party. She was a lawyer and held themselves mainly engaged in justice (civil and family law, legal assistance), but also with emancipation and public housing. Vargas was a member of the House of representatives for nine years, in the period from 1989 to 1998. Before they became member of Parliament, she was active in the Red Women, a women's organization in the periphery of the Dutch Labour Party. Of this organization was Van der Burg the last President. Van der Burg studied Dutch law at the University of Utrecht from 1964 to 1970. Later she followed various management courses and a mediationtraining. After her studies she went to work as a lawyer Dutch law at the municipality of Amsterdam. They did this three years, after which they switched to the municipality of Utrecht, where she also worked as a lawyer. Here she worked five years. From 1979 to 1984 she worked, still at the municipality of Utrecht, urban renewal as Coordinator. They continued working in Utrecht at various companies until 1989. From 1989 to 1998 was a member of the House of Van der Burg, where she was spokesperson of the housing, equal opportunities and justice, on behalf of the House of representatives of the Group of the party of labour. She loved working with Home Affairsitself further. Vargas worked as an independent mediator from 2000. By 1 June 1 June 2003 to 2009 she was Vice-President of the equal treatment Commission, a Committee established by the Dutch Government that deals with combating discrimination and promoting equal treatment. She is currently President of the Association women and law (VVR). They do this since 2008.
