He played junior hockey with the Peterborough Petes. Gibson was selected 3rd (36th overall) by the Boston Bruins in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft and 3rd (34th overall) by the Los Angeles Sharks in the 1973 WHA Amateur Draft. Gubson played two seasons in the minors. In the 1975–76 season, he played with the Bruins, but he returned to the minors in the following season. After Boston waived Gibson in 1977, he played briefly for the Washington Capitals. Gibson spent the next three seasons with SC Riessersee in Germany and retired in 1983.

In 1979-80 he was a mid-season replacement as a player-coach for the Hershey Bears. He won the Calder Cup and the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as coach of the year. Gibson spent the next three seasons with SC Riessersee in Germany and retired in 1983. He played in a total of 63 NHL games, scoring 9 goals and 19 assists.
