The term vaccine video refers to video content produced and initially distributed by a business, marketing group or other entity hoping to use online video sharing to promote a product, service or event as part of viral marketing. The term vaccine video refers to video content produced and initially distributed by a business, marketing group or other entity hoping to use online video sharing to promote a product, service or event as part of viral marketing. It stands in contrast to a viral video, which spreads naturally by users passing the viral video on to friends and colleagues by email, IM, blogs or other online communication. As the different names suggest a viral video gains widespread exposure after being passed on through the natural process of Internet sharing, whereas a vaccine video needs to be "injected" into users' online experience in an effort to force its widespread acceptance. Even mainstream, well-known companies have attempted to use vaccine videos, primarily in an effort to connect with a younger audience for their sales pitch . Vaccine videos are often promulgated through the same channels that viral videos use, especially YouTube and other video-sharing sites. However, users tend to treat vaccine videos with hostility if the videos' marketing intention is discernible. For example, in an effort to promote the upcoming film "The Poughkeepsie Tapes", marketers posted a supposedly real-life "clip" related to the movie on YouTube as a user named "SamRowley" (a character name from the actual movie). Users quickly caught on, though, and while the SamRowley YouTube page contains some requests for additional footage, it also features comments such as "Hi viral advertising guy!", "Hello fictional person! What's it like inside a movie script?" and "and nice try at viral marketing". Other viral marketing efforts have also encountered fierce resistance from target groups Despite this resistance, the use of vaccine videos has become increasingly attractive and widespread because of the huge breadth and small cost associated with initiating such videos.
